A client who is soon to attend her Christmas night out asked me for some advice on creating copper coloured smokey eyes using the Urban Decay Naked1 palette, which is on of my all-time fave eyeshadow collections! So hopefully this will inspire you to re-create the look yourself using these or similar eyeshadows! Any comments or questions, let me know!
STEP 1: BASE
Using the shade ‘Naked’ apply it all over the lid, from the lash line, just up to the socket line. This is a matt shade and creates some tone and shading to the eye. After applying to the lid, run some of the same colour along your lower lash line, this helps to balance out your eyes. Concentrate on the outer corner of the lower lash line to keep the eyes looking wide and open.
STEP 2: ADD COLOUR AND SHIMMER!
Add some shimmer and a darker, smokier colour by adding the shade ‘sidecar’ again on the whole lid, up to the eye socket, and some along the bottom lash line. You’ll see the difference just adding a shimmer shade can make, in the picture below.
STEP 3: ADDING THE SMOKEY EFFECT!
This is when we start to shape and darken the eye to get the smokey eye look. Start by running the shade ‘Hustle’ along your lash line on the lid. It doesn’t need to be a perfect line – smokey eyes are sultry and blended so you don’t want it too perfect! It should look a little like this:
After this, start on the very outer corner of your eyes and continue to apply ‘Hustle’ blending it upwards and right in to your socket. It’s ok to go a little higher than your socket line to open up the eyes, but not too much! After doing that, it’ll look more like this:
STEP 4: HIGHLIGHT
Add a little of the shade ‘Virgin’ to your brow bown and inner corner. With open eyes pic below, you can start to see the smokey eye look, still in keeping with coppers, bronzes and browns, taking effect:
STEP 5: EYELINER
Run eyeliner along your lash line, as close to the lashes as possible and make it thinner on the inner corner, this will open up your eyes. Here I used Bobbi Brown Gel Liner in Black Ink, any gel or liquid liner will work for this look. Use the leftover liner on your brush and lightly run it along your bottom lashes, it should then look more like this, with more darkness to really define the eyes:
STEP 6: MASCARA
Apply Mascara to top and bottom lashes, and plenty of it! My favourite is Lancome, Hypose, it’s a fantastic mascara! And voila you’re done!
Hope you enjoyed this and can re-create the look! You can buy Urban Decay online, from House of Fraser stores, or most Debenhams stores. Good luck with your own makeup looks!
